Billy Roberts is an immensely talented young footballer and the hope for the local team. However, he is suspended after he has been caught stealing for a friend and becomes resentful, turning to crime as a consequence.

Billy Roberts looks after his blind father John by working in a dairy but he is also something of a local hero, as he is a talented footballer, attending a local football academy with a view to playing for a top club. One day he is persuaded by dodgy pal Terry to steal him a pair of trainers from the kit sponsors. He is caught and, despite John's pleas, he is expelled from the academy. He is unhappy and vulnerable to Terry's suggestion that he become a drug-dealer but when an innocent kid gets hurt he sees this as a wake-up call and grasses up the other dealers. As a result they give him a punishment beating so severe it is unlikely that he will ever play football again.
